Microplasmin injection may offer a nonsurgical treatment option

Intravitreal injection of microplasmin may be effective as a nonsurgical treatment for vitreomacular traction, according to results of the phase 2 MIVI-2T trial.

“Microplasmin is able to nonsurgically induce traction release in 40% [of patients] and macular hole closure in half of the patients,” Peter Stalmans, MD, PhD, said.

At three centers in Belgium, Dr. Stalmans and colleagues investigated the ability of a single intravitreal microplasmin injection to induce posterior vitreous detachment and nonsurgically relieve vitreomacular traction in 30 patients. Of these patients, 12 were randomly assigned to treatment with a 75-µg microplasmin injection, 12 were assigned to treatment with a 125-µg injection and six received a sham injection.

Four microplasmin-treated patients and two control patients had macular holes.

Posterior vitreous detachment was induced in four microplasmin-treated patients and in none of the control patients. Also, vitreomacular traction resolved in nine microplasmin-treated patients and two control patients, Dr. Stalmans said.

In addition, two macular holes in patients treated with microplasmin were closed, but neither of the two macular holes seen in control patients had closed.

In terms of vision, four microplasmin-injected patients had at least a three line improvement, while there was no improvement in vision among control patients.

“Regarding the safety, we found that the study drug was well-tolerated,” Dr. Stalmans said.

Ciao,

Hi,
Just to keep you guys posted, we know a little more about Dr Stalmans's upcoming experiment.
I mentioned in Crevatin's topic that a member of the English speaking forum (Yuku) was told by Dr Stalmans about a possible experiment which would consist in giving drops to patients before they undergo vitrectomy in the hope that floaters disappear.

Well we have some more news. It won't be eye drops but an injection in the vitreous. We may know more if the ethics committee authorizes the experiment on Wednesday.

Because this doctor has been working on microplasmin for a long time, we may assume that he will try this product for floaters.

Seem that will be the first microplasmin application for floater....wow !

Keep us informed about that if you have news.

Thanks

(english/italian traduzione) Buone notizie a tutti!

http://oneclearvision.org/node/90

Dear sir,

We are presently testing microplasmin only in conjunction with vitrectomy in a limited number of patients, not as a sole treatment.

Sincerely,

P. Stalmans

Hi Alvind

I have no more contacted Dr Stalman but in any case in his last email he wrote me that he would use microplasmin only in conjunction with vitrectomy. He specified microplasmin only before vitrectomy.

Marco

I think he says that because things may go bad with the microplasmin and he wants to be looking at a vitrectomy surgery anyways. But in my opinion this does not mean that microplasmin alone cannot reduce the floater symptoms. I think this study will also investigate this. If they find out that certain doses of microplasmin reduces floaters but does not cause the vitreous to collapse, then that may be useful for floaters.
